During semester 1, students will embark on a creative journey where they will explore and master the foundational elements of art—line, shape, form, space, color, value, and texture. Through a variety of hands-on projects, they will learn how each element can be used to express ideas, communicate emotions, and create visually captivating compositions all while learning about their identity in Christ. Students will also dive into the principles of design, including balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity in art. By applying these principles, they will understand how to organize the elements effectively, leading to more harmonious and impactful works of art.
Semester 2 will focus on exploring the different art mediums and techniques that can be used to make visually interesting compositions. We will begin to study ways to help develop our skills as an artist; learning to draw what we see. We will draw still lifes, nature, learn to shade and show dimension, practice one-point perspective, self-portraits and more!
Whether through drawing with pencils, chalk pastels, oil pastels, colored pencils and markers the class will encourage art experimentation and personal expression while helping students refine their artistic techniques.
*Note - Elementary Art class is on a two year rotation and can be taken for two years before technique is repeated. Also, semester 2 often builds on semester 1, but a student can successfully take either semester individually.

Curriculum Link: https://www.christianbook.com/science-in-the-beginning/jay-wile/9780989042406/pd/042406?event=ESRCG
Science in the Beginning introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. The beginning of history is given in the Bible's creation account, and this book uses the days of creation as a way of introducing a wide range of scientific concepts including the nature of light, energy conservation, the properties of air and water, introductory botany, our solar system, basic zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. As the students learn about these scientific concepts, they are constantly reminded of the Creator who fashioned the marvels they are studying, and focusing on more than one branch of science during the course of a year keeps the students engaged and introduces them to concepts which they will continue to master throughout their junior high and high school science experiences. This course will include hands-on experimentation and an introduction to microscopy.

Essentials for Writing is designed to introduce students to fundamental elements of the writing process. It is ideal for students who need to establish and hone writing skills before they jump into a more intense writing class with less specific feedback, like Introduction to Writing. In Essentials for Writing A, students will explore a variety of fiction and non-fiction writing styles, with an emphasis on organization, sentence structure, paragraph formation, editing, and revising. Over the course of the year, a variety of essays, short stories, and poetry will be written, in addition to a research project and participation in NANO WRIMO (National Novel Writing Month).

Curriculum: Science in the Atomic Age by Jay Wile
Curriculum Link:
Science in the Atomic Age is an engaging laboratory-based, middle school science course that covers a wide range of topics which will prepare students for their upcoming high school science years. Introducing scientific concepts in the context of history, students will follow the work of the scientists who lived during the mid-1900s period known as "The Atomic Age." Starting with an introduction to the scientific method and the role of experiments, students will then build on their understanding of atoms by learning about the Periodic Table of Elements and how to interpret it. Further chapters cover covalent and ionic compounds, the discovery of DNA's role in life, cells, and more. As the course builds in the complexity of topics covered, students discuss the levels of organization found in creation. They will learn how cells work together to make tissues, how tissues come together to make organs, how organs form organ systems, how those organ systems produce organisms, and how those organisms relate to one another in populations and communities. Throughout the course, God's design for life is continually highlighted!
* 8th grade students taking this course will be introduced to concepts covered in depth during their upcoming high school science years in order to lay a stronger foundation of preparedness for the rigorous courses that lie ahead.

This class is an introduction to debate which is the “art of persuasion by reason.” Students will learn the foundations of debate from the early Greek philosophers to the founding fathers, to the present importance of debate in today’s political climate. Students will gain practical experience in crafting and building opinions and arguments based on facts not feelings, in supporting those arguments with evidence, and in presenting those arguments with confidence and enthusiasm whether in a formal or informal setting. We will use various modified debate formats such as Lincoln-Douglas, policy, and group debate. As this class will require extensive internet research and watching of online video material, a laptop will be required. Essentials for Writing is designed to introduce students to fundamental elements of the writing process. It is ideal for students who need to establish and hone writing skills before they jump into a more intense writing class with less specific feedback, like Introduction to Writing. In Essentials for Writing, students will explore a variety of fiction and non-fiction writing styles, with an emphasis on organization, sentence structure, paragraph formation, editing, and revising. Over the course of the year, a variety of essays, short stories, and poetry will be written, in addition to a research project and participation in NANO WRIMO (National Novel Writing Month).
Essentials for Writing has a two-year rotation of curriculum. These years can be taken in any order or as stand-alone classes.
* Essentials for Writing (B) is the same curriculum as Essentials for Writing (A), but with expectations more appropriate for 12 to 14 year-olds (7th-9th grade). If your student has taken Essentials (A) for one year as a 5th grader, they should stay in (A) as a 6th grader for the second year of curriculum; they do not automatically progress to (B).
If your student’s first introduction to the fundamentals of writing is during their 7th grade year or higher, we recommend that you register for Essentials (B). After that year, you may determine whether you would like your student to continue with Essentials (B) the following year, for the second year of the curriculum, or advance to the intermediate level of writing courses at Bridges with our Introduction to Writing class.

One of the greatest skills one can learn in the high school years is how to speak publicly. The ability to speak in front of an audience of five, five hundred, or five thousand is learned. That’s what this class is all about. In the same way that one learns how to add and subtract or how to write in complete sentences, students can learn the art and the science of how to speak publicly in a step-by-step format. In this course, students will hone their speaking skills through conversation, extemporaneous speeches, prepared “platform” speeches, like informative and persuasive, and interpretive speeches which are one man performances of children’s stories and other great literature. All of this will be done while learning to power through the nerves that affect every public speaker.
This course is aimed at all high school level students, especially those planning to attend college, and may be taken more than once.
